Massapequa Kiwanis Club

In 2015 Massapequa Kiwanis Club began their Drug Awareness Program to help address the prescription drug and opioid abuse, and heroin use epidemics that are devastating too many families in Massapequa. Drug abuse and addiction, unfortunately, often goes hand-in-hand with mental health disorders like anxiety, depression, split personality disorder, and can lead to suicide.

In order to help educate our community about drug use and addiction, and what it means to be mentally healthy, Massapequa Kiwanis Club created a drug awareness handbook. Since September of 2015, the club has distributed drug awareness books to every parent at the Massapequa School District grammar schools, Berner Middle School and Massapequa High School “Back to School Night”.  Massapequa Kiwanis also started a poster and social media campaign within the school district, in an effort to send the message to students that drug use and addiction changes you and takes control of your life.

In an effort to provide access to help for families in the community, Massapequa Kiwanis is partnering with a 24-hour hotline 516-342-3355, made available to parents, students, young adults, anyone in the community experiencing distress - whether it be drug and addiction, or mental health related. The hotline is available as a first-step for those in our community who are unsure of how to seek help. The hotline is truly staffed full-time for 24 hours a day, no leaving messages.

Kiwanis International, which oversees all local chapters of Kiwanis, has recognized the good work that Massapequa Kiwanis is doing to make its Drug Awareness and Mental Health Program more robust. Massapequa Kiwanis wants to build on the success of this program and expand the program’s reach to other communities on Long island, across New York State, and beyond.

The mission here is simple; identify the gap in education and access to resources for families in our community, and put into action ideas that fill the gap, to better address the drug use, addiction, and mental health epidemics in Massapequa.  We believe this approach will help families in our community get their son, daughter, brother, sister, nephew, niece, grandson, granddaughter, mom or dad, aunt or uncle, back on track.

Massapequa Kiwanis Club and Run for Ryan are aware that they are NOT drug, addiction, and mental health experts, they are, however, concerned members of the community trying very hard to help pave the way for a healthier Massapequa. We are fellow Massapequans who understand the day-to-day struggle for families that have a loved one who suffers or has suffered from drug addiction and mental health disorders.  Run for Ryan and Massapequa Kiwanis Club members believe that Massapequa is a great place to call home. In working together, we want to raise funds to help families, neighbors, and friends in our community lead happy and healthy lives.
